Everything you need to know the sights and sounds of White Night Melbourne
No-one does culture like the Parisians, and they’ve got the amazing annual Nuit Blanche to prove it! Literally meaning ‘white night’, the Paris Nuit Blanche is a cultural festival of sorts, held over just one night and featuring all kinds of innovative live performances and exhibitions. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of visual art, fashion, music, film and more, set against the stunning backdrop of Paris from dusk to dawn!
Luckily, if it’s not exactly convenient for you to jet over to France at the moment, us Melburnians have got something just as good – or possibly even better? After its amazing reception from the public in 2013, White Night Melbourne is back for its second year and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever!
Mark your calendar for 22 February as Melbourne embarks on a 12 hour marathon that gives you a visual extravaganza not to be missed. White Night was originally created to make art and culture accessible to large audiences within public spaces. As part of the extravaganza, you will see Melbourne’s city streets, laneways, landmarks and cultural institutions transform into a cultural playground, for families, couples and friends alike to soak up and enjoy.
There’s something for everyone, so make sure to round up all the troops and bring them out for an amazing night they’ll never forget!
Art and Design
If you’re a bit of an arts fiend, you’ll absolutely love the amazing aesthetics of Melbourne’s White Night. Eager to express your love for the city? Be sure to participate in creating the LOVE MELBOURNE Aussie Kevron key-tag sculpture. Fascinated by the human anatomy? You won’t want to miss the Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition at the Forum Theatre. Want to experience an eclipse? Check out light-based artist James Tapscott’s stunningly ethereal artificial eclipse in the Melbourne’s laneways.
Film and Performance
Whether you’re a fan of drama and action happening on a screen or right in front you, there’s a great assortment of live and filmed performances at Melbourne’s White Night. If you’re looking for something new to read, watch the group of incredible writers at The Book Of The Night feverishly collaborating on a novel to be finished over the 12 hours of the festival (with the final product ready for you to purchase as an eBook the next day!). Meanwhile, the Melbourne Museum will be hosting a prestigious 007 event for all James Bonds fanatics to enjoy, displaying a range of gadgets, vehicles, costumes, and technology from various films in the franchise, from Dr. No and Octopussy to Die Another Day and Casino Royale.
Music and Fashion
When it comes to the musical arts and fashion forays, no city does it better than Melbourne. Those who are ready to get their dance on should put the Northern Lights Music Stage on their must-see list for the night; this event will be showcasing several of Melbourne’s most talented psychedelic and pop and dance electric musicians. Smooth jazz and swing tunes will be crooned all night at the J + R&B Music Stage. Meanwhile, Melbourne’s fashionistas should definitely make a point of seeing Fashgif, which explores various local and international runway shows in an animated format with humour and grace.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the second annual White Night. There’s so much more for Melburnians to marvel at, enjoy, and take part in than can conceivably be described in one piece of writing! Be sure to get out and see it all for yourself, and don’t forget to check out the official White Night Melbourne website for more information. From 7am to 7pm on the 22nd February, the city is yours!
