Spotlight on Melbourne

Arts, Culture and Shopping Galore!

It’s the proudly proclaimed cultural hub of Australia, and that’s not a title that Melbourne takes lightly. Whether you’re a brand new visitor or a long-time resident, this thriving city never disappoints when it comes to offering a smorgasbord of delightful urban activities, attractions and cultural engagements.

Whether you’re an art groupie, music junkie or devoted foodie, there’s always something exciting happening in Melbourne to pique your interest and invigorate your holiday experience. Don’t confine yourself to the CBD, either; each of the suburbs arrayed around the city have their own distinctive cultural moods and flavours, which should be explored to the fullest. When it comes to delectable food, incredible shopping and exciting nightlife, Melburnians are undoubtedly the experts, so follow their lead and see for yourself what all the fuss is all about.

Arts and entertainment galore

  • For a cultural hit, head to the National Gallery of Victoria (or NGV, to the locals) to see amazing artworks by reputed artists from all over the world, or alternately check out the fantastic ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) for exhibitions detailing everything to do with films, television, the internet and games.
  • The great range of markets around the city sell everything from fresh produce to original artwork to vintage clothing and furniture. The farmer’s market at the Abbotsford Convent is always very popular, as are the gorgeous handmade garments, arts and crafts at the Rose Street Market.
  • Melbourne is also famous for its incredible live shows and performances – the dazzling production of King Kong, for example, is currently being staged at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre and has received rave reviews.

Foodies, eat your hearts out

If there’s one thing Melburnians love to do, and do well, it’s eating! With the incredible assortment of cafes and restaurants sprinkled throughout the CBD and surrounding suburbs, hungry tourists are always spoiled for choice. Just hop in a car, your own or one from Europcar, and whizz around the city to check out Melbourne’s many delightful eateries. Whether you’re in the mood for Asian, Italian or Mexican, there’s plenty of options to satisfy your tastes. Jim’s Greek Tavern in Collingwood, for example, is a unique and authentic dining experience; they offer no menu, but a delectable array of traditional Greek food such as grilled calamari, lamb skewers and saganaki, octopus and sharp tzatziki. Meanwhile, Misty’s Dinner in Prahran is a 1950s American tour de force, serving enormous helpings of gravy fries, chilli dogs and buffalo burgers, which you can wash down with Dr Pepper and root beer floats!

Retail therapy

Visual flair and fashion has always been an important part of the Melbourne lifestyle, and the vast shopping opportunities across the city emphasize this fact. Whether your style is sleek and sophisticated or charmingly casual, the sheer range of markets, op shops, boutiques and chain stores throughout Melbourne can cater to your fashion needs. Head to the enormous Chadstone shopping mall for two levels of beautiful clothing and shoe stores that stretch for miles in the distance. Brunswick Street in Fitzroy features a great assortment of vintage shops, interspersed with quirky cafes for when you need a shopping break. If you’re looking for a bargain, don’t go past DFO South Wharf in the city, which offers items from popular fashion brands such as Country Road and Tony Bianco at incredibly discounted prices.

There’s a reason why Melbourne is such a popular tourist destination, as well as a great place to live. Despite its busy, fast-paced environment, it’s a beautiful city that allows its inhabitants and visitors to truly enjoy all the best parts of the urban experience. Just make sure to get out of the CBD every now and then to cruise around and explore all areas of the city, in order to get the most out of Australia’s artistic and cultural epicentre. In Melbourne, you’ll never be bored – it’s a constantly thrilling holiday experience and a thriving spot to visit.
